The fast-growing Matanuska-Susitna Borough communities north of Anchorage, connected via the Glenn Highway. Wasilla (pop. ~11,000) and Palmer (pop. ~7,800) are the incorporated cities, but the bulk of the population lives in large census-designated places like Knik-Fairview (pop. ~19,300), Meadow Lakes, and Tanaina. This is Alaska's fastest-growing region, offering lower housing costs and more land than Anchorage proper, with a 45-60 minute commute to downtown.
