Northwest Indiana

South Shore Line / I-80-94

The Indiana communities of Lake and Porter counties, known locally as 'The Region,' connected to downtown Chicago by I-80/94, I-90 (Indiana Toll Road), and the South Shore Line (NICTD commuter rail — the last interurban in the US). The corridor stretches from Whiting and Hammond on the Illinois border east through Gary, Portage, and Chesterton to Michigan City. Munster, Highland, Schererville, Crown Point, and Valparaiso form the primary commuter-suburban communities, offering significantly lower property taxes than Illinois alongside a 45-70 minute commute to the Loop. Indiana Dunes National Park fronts the Lake Michigan shoreline.
