The three outer-ring counties in the Detroit MSA: Livingston County to the northwest (Howell, Brighton, along I-96), St. Clair County to the northeast (Port Huron, Marysville, along I-94 and the St. Clair River/Lake Huron shore), and Lapeer County to the north (Lapeer, along I-69). These counties offer rural-residential character, significantly lower housing costs than Oakland or Macomb counties, and practical commuting distance to Detroit-area employment.
