Iron Range (Northern St. Louis County)

The historic iron-mining communities of northeast Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range, anchored by Virginia, Hibbing (birthplace of Bob Dylan and the Greyhound Bus Lines), Chisholm, Mountain Iron, Eveleth, Biwabik, and Aurora. The region has been a major iron ore producer since the 1890s and remains active today with taconite mining operations. Ely (in Lake County, just outside the MSA) is the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The Iron Range towns are 60-90 minutes from downtown Duluth along US-53.
