Iona is a rapidly growing bedroom community five miles northeast of downtown Idaho Falls, with a 2024 population of ~3,105 and a growth rate of +152.8% since 2000 — faster than 100% of similarly sized US cities. The city was founded in 1883 as a Sand Creek irrigated agricultural settlement and renamed Iona later in the decade. Today its appeal centers on a ~10-minute commute to downtown Idaho Falls, newer housing stock built during the city's expansion, and the annual Iona Days civic festival every July.

Pioneer Island Town Beneath the Menan Buttes
Menan is a 715-resident Jefferson County city about 25 miles northwest of Idaho Falls, first settled in 1879 as 'Pooles Island' and among the earliest Latter-day Saint agricultural settlements in the Snake River Valley. Its defining landmark is North Menan Butte, a National Natural Landmark just west of town — one of the world's largest tuff cones and the only documented freshwater-formed volcanic eruption site in the continental United States. Commerce is limited, so residents rely on Rigby, Rexburg, and Idaho Falls for grocery, healthcare, and most employment.
Menan is served by Jefferson County Joint School District 251 in Rigby — not West Jefferson SD 253. The town has no full-service grocery store or pharmacy; most daily errands are run in Rigby (~12 min) or Rexburg (~22 min).

Jefferson County Seat and the Birthplace of Television
Rigby is the Jefferson County seat and commercial center for the agricultural Upper Snake River Valley north of Idaho Falls, with a 2024 population of ~6,157 and a downtown that traces back to 1884. The city is nationally notable as the Birthplace of Television — Philo T. Farnsworth conceived the electronic television scan pattern as a 14-year-old plowing a potato field here in 1921 and later sketched the idea on his Rigby High School chemistry teacher's blackboard. Present-day Rigby combines a ~12-minute commute to Idaho Falls with Jefferson County Lake, Yellowstone Bear World 10 minutes up US-20, and a downtown anchored by the 1922-founded Broulim's grocery.
Philo T. Farnsworth is honored at the Jefferson County Historical Society's Farnsworth TV & Pioneer Museum on North State Street. Rigby is part of Jefferson County Joint School District #251 (separate from Idaho Falls District #91 and Bonneville Joint District #93). Foothills Farming Town at the Reservoir's Gateway
Ririe is a 667-resident Jefferson County city about 25 miles northeast of downtown Idaho Falls, perched where the irrigated Snake River Plain meets the foothills of the Snake River Range. It was founded in 1888 by homesteader David Ririe and shares its name with nearby Ririe Reservoir — a 1,400-plus-acre Bonneville County Parks impoundment that draws boaters, waterskiiers, and trout anglers from across eastern Idaho. Ririe has its own standalone school district (Ririe Joint 252), a functional Main Street, and annual Ririe Days celebration each July.
Ririe is served by its own Ririe Joint School District 252 — separate from Jefferson 251 in Rigby and Bonneville 93 in Idaho Falls. The town straddles the Jefferson/Bonneville county line, so verify school enrollment eligibility by address.

I-15 Railroad Siding on the Market Lake Plain
Roberts is a ~530-resident Jefferson County city about 18 miles north of downtown Idaho Falls along I-15, making it one of the metro's shortest I-15 north commuter addresses. The town was originally called Market Lake — named by 19th-century trappers for the abundance of game around a seasonal lake — and was renamed in 1910 after Harry Ashton Roberts, an Oregon Short Line Railroad official, when the Utah and Northern (now Union Pacific) main line defined the new town grid. Roberts has been growing faster than its Jefferson County peers (roughly +25% since 2020) as buyers seek out lower-cost I-15 commuter locations.
Roberts is served by Jefferson County Joint School District 251 (Rigby) — the same district as Menan, not Ririe's standalone SD 252. Daily grocery, healthcare, and most employment are in Idaho Falls (~22 min S) or Rigby (~20 min SE).

Compact Bedroom City on US-20 North of Idaho Falls
Ucon is a compact 0.79-square-mile bedroom city of ~1,374 residents in Bonneville County, roughly 8 miles north of Idaho Falls along US-20. Originally settled in 1883 as Willow Creek and renamed several times before settling on Ucon in 1911, the city once briefly outpaced Idaho Falls in population when it had a downtown amusement hall, mercantile, and hotels — before the railroad bypassed it for neighboring Menan and Roberts. Today Ucon functions as a quiet Snake River Plain commuter city with Ucon Elementary within its limits, Yellowstone Bear World 10 minutes up US-20, and daily access to both Rigby and Idaho Falls.
Ucon went through three name changes before 1911 (Willow Creek → Ako → Elva → Ucon), and the final name was reportedly drawn from a jar by local citizens. The city is served by Bonneville Joint School District #93 (separate from Idaho Falls District #91 and Jefferson County District #251). GIFT On-Demand transit does not extend to Ucon.
