Beaches
Jacksonville's Atlantic coastal communities — the independent municipalities of Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach — plus the Mayport area near Naval Station Mayport. These towns opted out of the 1968 city-county consolidation and retain their own governments, giving them a distinct small-town beach character within the larger metro. Jacksonville Beach is the commercial hub with restaurants, bars along First Street, and the Jacksonville Beach Pier. Atlantic Beach offers a quieter, family-oriented vibe with Hanna Park's trails and beaches. Neptune Beach is the smallest and most walkable, centered on a charming downtown. SR-202 (J. Turner Butler Boulevard) and Beach Boulevard provide the primary east-west commuter connections to the mainland.
