The twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn face each other across the Androscoggin River and function as a single urban area known locally as **'L-A'** or **'Lewiston-Auburn.'** Lewiston (on the east bank, Maine's 2nd-largest city with ~37,100 residents) is home to **Bates College** — founded 1855, one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country and one of the 'CBB' trio of Maine liberal arts schools with Colby and Bowdoin. Lewiston contains the historic Bates Mill complex (once one of the largest textile mills in the country, now redeveloped into offices and apartments), the Androscoggin Bank Colisée, the Kora Shrine Center, and the Great Falls of the Androscoggin. Auburn (on the west bank, the Androscoggin County seat) is home to the Auburn Mall and the historic Auburn City Hall. The two cities share public services including the L/A Water Pollution Control Authority and Lewiston-Auburn Municipal Airport.
