Winchester is the Clark County seat about 21 miles east of Lexington via I-64, known for its revitalized historic downtown, a dozen-plus Beer Cheese Trail restaurants, and the Ale-8-One bottling plant — producer of the only soft drink invented in Kentucky still in existence and the oldest privately-held bottler in the US, under continuous Wainscott ownership since 1902. The city serves as the official gateway to Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest, whose administrative headquarters sits at 1700 Bypass Road. Housing is notably less expensive than Lexington or Georgetown, with median sale prices around $235K on a more buyer-friendly market than the rest of the metro, and Clark Regional Medical Center anchors local healthcare with a $70M campus opened in 2012.
