Meade County (north, home of Sturgis — site of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the largest motorcycle rally in the world with attendance of 500,000+, plus Ellsworth Air Force Base on the Pennington/Meade line, and the Bear Butte State Park sacred site) and Custer County (south, home of Custer — the oldest town in the Black Hills, Custer State Park with its famed bison herd and the Needles Highway, Crazy Horse Memorial — a massive unfinished mountain carving, and Jewel Cave National Monument). These counties form the core of the Black Hills tourism region.
