Rutland City & Inner Marble Valley

US-7 / US-4 / VT-3 / Amtrak Ethan Allen Express

The urban core of Rutland County along US-7 and US-4. Anchored by **Rutland** (the 3rd-largest city in Vermont, pop. ~15,800, and the Rutland County seat) — historically known as the **'Marble City'** because nearby marble quarries in Proctor and West Rutland made Rutland one of the top marble-producing regions in the US in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Rutland contains the historic downtown (the Rutland Free Library, the Paramount Theatre, the Chaffee Art Center), Rutland Regional Medical Center (the region's main hospital), the Vermont State Fair grounds, and Amtrak's Ethan Allen Express terminus. The region also includes **Rutland Town** (the surrounding township), **West Rutland** (former marble quarry center), **Proctor** (home of the Vermont Marble Museum), **Pittsford**, **Mendon**, **Chittenden VT** (not to be confused with Chittenden County), and **Brandon** (a historic town north of Rutland, birthplace of Stephen A. Douglas).
