West Side & Medina County

The communities west and southwest of downtown along US 90 and Loop 410, from Leon Valley and Balcones Heights through Helotes to Castroville in Medina County. Leon Valley is a compact incorporated city surrounded by San Antonio on all sides, while Helotes retains a small-town Hill Country feel despite rapid growth. Lackland AFB (JBSA-Lackland) — the U.S. Air Force's largest training base — anchors military employment on the southwest side. Castroville, known as 'The Little Alsace of Texas,' preserves Alsatian heritage architecture 25 miles west of downtown.
