Franklin County is the northernmost Pioneer Valley county, bordering Vermont. Anchored by Greenfield (the Franklin County seat, at the junction of I-91 and the Mohawk Trail MA-2), the town of Montague (containing the historic Turners Falls mill village on the Connecticut River), Deerfield (containing Historic Deerfield — a preserved colonial village — and Deerfield Academy, one of the oldest boarding schools in America), Conway, Ashfield, Shelburne (Shelburne Falls and the famous Bridge of Flowers), Sunderland, Northfield, Bernardston, Orange, Athol, and the rural hill towns along the Mohawk Trail. The region is largely rural/semi-rural with small historic village centers.
