The four outer Topeka MSA counties: Jackson (north, anchored by Holton), Jefferson (east, anchored by Oskaloosa — the county seat, plus Valley Falls, Meriden, and Perry), Osage (south, anchored by Lyndon and Osage City), and Wabaunsee (west, anchored by Alma — the county seat). These counties offer rural small-town character with practical commuting distance to Topeka. Jefferson County includes portions of Perry Lake, a major recreational reservoir.
