Portsmouth & Suffolk
Portsmouth (pop. 97,915) and Suffolk (pop. 94,324) anchor the western side of Hampton Roads' Southside. Portsmouth sits directly across the Elizabeth River from Norfolk, connected by the Downtown Tunnel (I-264) and the Midtown Tunnel, and is home to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (despite its name, located in Portsmouth) — the U.S. Navy's oldest and largest shipyard. Olde Towne Portsmouth features one of the region's best-preserved historic districts with Colonial-era architecture, while Churchland and Cradock offer established residential neighborhoods. Suffolk, the largest city in Virginia by land area (430 sq mi), has experienced rapid suburban growth in its northern Harbour View community while maintaining rural character in its expansive southern reaches. The city is home to the Planters peanut legacy and sits at the crossroads of US-58 and US-13/460.
